Golf Day 2016

The OCC Annual Golf day was on the 17th June at High Elms. Having been up there during the week to check on proceedings for Friday, and what the backup plan would be if it rained, I entered into a round to check out the course. Well the rough was exactly that, rough, and looked like come Friday it was going to be very challenging. The weather forecast was not going to make it any better.

The day started off with me being a bit late, which is the usual, especially after Ascot the day before. The Morning texas scramble groups were announced and the first group set off with their team captain Wooz leading the way. Ben lead the 2nd group which got off to a good start straight down the middle. The third group lead by our guest debutant Adrian (the Broadway Bandit) also got off the tee without any major issues. The last group off was lead by Yamma. By all accounts there was a lot of "get in the hole" and shouting around the greens triggered just after the previous 4 ball had teed off the next hole. At that point it was very hard to tell who was leading, but lots of people trying to throw other groups off their team game.

So it was back to the club for some lunch, light refreshment and banter about some people's handicaps.

After a quick tinker with a few handicaps to make it fairer and a reshuffle of the groups the afternoon started and it was very interesting.

Although you were playing for yourself there were other games involved (team yellow ball and team stapleford), nearest the pin on 2 holes, and the longest drive. A lot of banter was out there which took its toll on a few players for missing some easy putts, and losing their ball off the tee. It looked like the heavens were going to open at one point and we would have to call it a day, but it skated around us and the sun came out. We were very lucky with the weather with only a 5 minute shower, and got some good golf in.

Back at the club house afterwards we had sandwiches and chips washed down by some refreshments, and the announcement of the winners as follows.

We had a fun quiz regarding the golf and players taking part on the day, and the winner picking up the prize money was Doug Broom.

Morning Texas scramble was won by Joe, John, Yamma & Sam, and Nearest the Pin was Wooz, the old master.

Afternoon Team Yellow ball was won by Joe, John, Doug & Jon. The Nearest the Pin on the 5th was, you guessed it, Wooz again! I think he took that hole home with him. Nearest the Pin on the 9th was Adrian Langford, and the longest drive was won by Wattsy.

The team stapleford was won by Pablo, Robbo, Ben & Wattsy. About time I won something!

That said, commiserations to Ben, for coming 2nd for a 4th time in OCC Golf Days, with 35 points. But the overall winner of this years OCC Golf Day was Jon Whiting, coming in with a fantastic score of 40 points.

I would like to thank everyone for coming and making it a very enjoyable day, which was continued in the evening with a few drinks at the Chelsfield Pub.
